The Basics
What is VoIP, and how does it work?keyboard_arrow_down
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) lets you access phone service over the internet. Calls are no longer dependent on traditional phone lines. VoIP achieves greater functionality at a lower cost for businesses. Many business owners report cost savings up to 70% after switching. Vantact is one of the highest-rated VoIP providers for businesses in Canada.
Will my VoIP phones continue to work if I move offices?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes, as long as you have fast and reliable internet at your new location, your VoIP phones will work. Since your phone system operates in the cloud, it’s not tethered to a physical location.
What is a virtual number?keyboard_arrow_down
A virtual number is a phone number that isn’t directly associated with a person or business. These numbers can be used to track response rates from marketing campaigns. Long-distance callers can dial a local virtual number and still reach your team.
What happens if the Vantact network goes down?keyboard_arrow_down
Vantact maintains a 99.999% uptime, equivalent to less than six minutes of downtime per year. We have several data centers across the U.S. and Canada to maintain this high degree of availability. This redundancy protects against fraud and natural disasters that impact business continuity.
What can Vantact do for me?keyboard_arrow_down
Vantact helps thousands of businesses across nearly every industry communicate with their customers. Our VoIP phone system lowers costs and offers CRM integration, email/voice/chat/SMS, productivity tools, voicemail-to-email, online faxing, on-hold music, on-demand call recording, and conference calls.
Is internet service included with your VoIP phone service?keyboard_arrow_down
No, we do not provide internet service as part of our plans. If you currently have an ISP, you would have no problems with speed or reliability. A business requires at least 100kbps per phone line (0.1 Mbps).
If my business is growing, can I adjust my VoIP phone system?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes, scalability is one of the key advantages of VoIP. Because the system is hosted in the cloud, there’s no need for costly infrastructure upgrades. You can scale to an almost unlimited number of users or locations.
If I lose power, will I still be able to make calls?keyboard_arrow_down
In most cases, a power outage means no internet and therefore no VoIP calls. The exception is if you have backup power for your router (and PoE switch if applicable). Vantact’s system can automatically redirect calls to cellphones, softphones, PCs, or landlines if your phones go offline.
How many calls can I make at a time?keyboard_arrow_down
The number of simultaneous calls depends on how many phones you have. Each phone can independently make and receive calls.
How is the call quality of a VoIP phone?keyboard_arrow_down
Call quality depends on the speed and reliability of your internet. You’ll hear a vast improvement over traditional landlines thanks to HD Voice technology. The number of HD Voice calls you can handle depends on your download and upload speed. Try our VoIP speed test.
How is Skype or Google Voice different from Vantact?keyboard_arrow_down
Skype and Google Voice are simple consumer VoIP solutions for personal use. Vantact is a complete business communications platform covering phone calls, email, SMS, call recording, analytics, CRM, and more, with dedicated support and business features to improve productivity and lower costs.
How can I guarantee call quality?keyboard_arrow_down
Use an Ethernet connection (CAT5e or CAT6) and enable Quality of Service (QoS), which prioritizes bandwidth for voice calls and minimizes latency. Small businesses typically won’t need QoS. It’s more relevant for organizations handling high concurrent call volumes.
Can I keep my current phone number?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. Vantact offers number porting, which allows you to transfer all of your current business numbers over. Maintain your existing service until porting has been completed.
Can I keep our toll-free number if I switch to VoIP?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. You can keep it and have it forward all calls to your new cloud numbers. Your callers will still call the toll-free number while you receive calls via the internet at lower rates.
Do I need to sign a contract?keyboard_arrow_down
Vantact offers the flexibility of month-to-month service for business VoIP.
Do I need an existing VoIP phone or phone number?keyboard_arrow_down
No to both. You can bring your own SIP phone, buy one, lease one, or skip desk phones entirely and use the Vantact App on your desktop, laptop, or smartphone. We also have thousands of local numbers you can choose from, including different area codes.
Do I have to maintain my VoIP business phone system?keyboard_arrow_down
No. Because your phone system is hosted in the cloud, Vantact performs all the maintenance for you. Plug your phones in and enjoy reliable, ultra-clear phone service. All you need is a fast and stable internet connection.
Can I set up VoIP on my own, or do I need a technician?keyboard_arrow_down
Most business users can set up their VoIP phone system on their own with no technicians required. Vantact provides plug-and-play functionality and browser-based management. If you have special requirements, we’re available to help every step of the way.
Are there any limitations to using a VoIP phone system?keyboard_arrow_down
No practical limitations. You can make as many calls as you need with as many users and phone numbers as required. Upgrading your plan is straightforward. The only requirement is a fast and stable internet connection. For emergency calls, Vantact provides Enhanced 911 (E911) with address information.

What is Voicemail-to-Email?keyboard_arrow_down

What is Voicemail-to-Text?keyboard_arrow_down
Voicemail messages are automatically transcribed and sent to you via email. This creates a digital paper trail you can follow up with later or use to make notes. Each Voicemail-to-Text line has an additional cost.

Shared Call Appearance allows multiple phones to share a single phone line. If you have phones at multiple locations, they can all use the same number. Ideal for people who regularly conduct business from more than one place.
What is the Barge-In feature?keyboard_arrow_down
Barge-In allows supervisors to listen in on live calls, interject into the conversation, or take over the call entirely. It’s a favorite for live training of new employees.
What is the “Music on Hold” feature?keyboard_arrow_down
Music on Hold plays audio when calls are on hold or in a queue. You can also play recorded marketing messages, broadcast special promotions, or provide valuable information to discourage callers from hanging up.
Does Vantact support conference calls?keyboard_arrow_down

Cloud PBX
What is a cloud PBX?keyboard_arrow_down
A cloud PBX delivers all the features of a traditional PBX (Private Branch Exchange) over the internet instead of on-site hardware. It can save your company thousands in expenses, and your IT team can focus on more significant challenges than maintaining an outdated phone system. Even if you move offices or travel overseas, you’ll have full access.
What is a PBX phone system?keyboard_arrow_down
PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. It’s a private phone system that allows phones in a building to dial other phones internally and optionally dial outside lines.
What is a softphone?keyboard_arrow_down
A softphone is software (an app) used to make calls through your VoIP service. In contrast, a desk phone is the physical hardware on your desk. Either method can be used to make calls through your cloud-based system.
What is a SIP-enabled phone? Do I need one?keyboard_arrow_down
A SIP-enabled phone uses the Session Initiation Protocol, the industry standard for VoIP. You can check Vantact’s list of recommended phones for compatible models.
What is QoS (Quality of Service), and why is it important?keyboard_arrow_down
QoS lets you prioritize internet bandwidth for your VoIP devices. This is important when employees are browsing, streaming, or using other bandwidth-heavy services. Most small users won’t need to adjust it, but if you do, Vantact support will guide you through the configuration.
What is meant by number porting?keyboard_arrow_down
Number porting means bringing your existing business phone numbers with you when you switch to Vantact. Porting might take up to five business days. In the meantime, Vantact provides temporary numbers and transparent call forwarding so there’s no interruption.
How fast does my mobile internet need to be for VoIP calls?keyboard_arrow_down
A strong 4G LTE connection handles calls with HD quality. In most cases, even 3G is sufficient. It’s less about raw speed and more about consistent low latency (jitter). In cases of weak cellular signal, a stable Wi-Fi connection works well as an alternative.
Can VoIP function over a wireless internet connection?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes, VoIP works over Wi-Fi as long as you have a strong signal. Wi-Fi can be susceptible to momentary interference, so a strong, consistent connection is recommended for the best call quality.
Can I take my phone number with me when I travel?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. As long as you have internet access, your VoIP phone system follows you via smartphone, laptop, or analog phone with the right adapter. Some countries may restrict SIP-based traffic, so check before you travel. Also update your E911 address information for emergency services.
Are calls on VoIP secure?keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. VoIP offers more security features than traditional landlines. Vantact ensures systems are always secure on our end. Use a strong, unique password and memorize your security PIN for maximum protection on your side.
